Stryker Hip Lawsuits Top 2,100 in NJ Litigation Following Settlement Announcement

A growing number of defective hip implant lawsuits are being filed against Stryker over its recalled Rejuvenate and ABG II hip systems.

According to a Case List updated on November 18, more than 2,160 lawsuits have been filed in Bergen County Superior Court over the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip replacement systems manufactured by medical device maker Stryker Orthopaedics. Plaintiffs involved in the Stryker litigation allege serious injuries caused by the recalled implants, about which they claim to have been inadequately warned, including pain, swelling, a loss of mobility, and symptoms related to a type of metal blood poisoning called metallosis. If you believe you have been adversely affected by side effects of Stryker’s Rejuvenate or ABG II hip implant, contact a reputable product liability lawyer today to discuss your legal options.

Recall of Defective Hip Replacement Systems

It was back in July 2012, that both Stryker’s Rejuvenate Modular and ABG II Modular-Neck Hip Stems were recalled by the medical device maker, a decision that came after it was discovered that the hip replacement systems could cause recipients serious injuries. The recall announcement came three months after Stryker issued an “Urgent Field Safety Notice” to hospitals and implant surgeons, highlighting the risk of complications associated with its Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stem models, which included corrosion and “fretting,” which allows small shards of the hip’s metallic components to leach into the patient’s bloodstream, tissues and/or bones.

Stryker Hip Implant Settlement Agreement

Before the New Jersey Stryker litigation released its most recent update regarding the artificial hip implant complaints pending against the medical device maker, the court announced a settlement agreement that could resolve thousands of suits brought in state and federal courts over injuries stemming from the recalled Rejuvenate and ABG II implants. According to an update issued on November 3, the Stryker settlement program would provide base awards of $300,000 per complaint, depending on the injuries resulting from revision surgery and other damages that may include the need for future surgeries.

Lawsuits Over Stryker Hip Implant Injuries

In addition to the Stryker hip implant complaints pending in New Jersey, thousands of other product liability lawsuits involving recalled Stryker hips have been consolidated in the U.S. District Court for the District of Minnesota, as part of a multidistrict litigation (MDL). According to allegations raised in the Stryker hip implant lawsuits, Stryker failed to provide consumers and the medical community with adequate warnings about the potential risk of side effects associated with the Rejuvenate and ABG II hip stems, including the risk of tissue and bone death at the implant site, and a higher-than-expected risk of early device failure.
