Ford Recalls Lincoln SUVs Due to Risk Vehicles May Be Shut Off During Use

Drivers Accidentally Pressing Push-Start Ignition Button
The Lincoln MKC recall was announced by Ford on January 6, after reports indicated that drivers were accidentally touching the push-start ignition button while the vehicles were moving, causing the ignition to shut off and bringing the vehicle to a sudden stop comparable to slamming on the brakes. According to Ford, due to the push-start button’s close proximity to other controls, some drivers and passengers are accidentally cutting off the engine while intending to push the “S” button, which puts the vehicles into Sport-Mode, or while attempting to change a setting on the dashboard display, which controls navigation, Bluetooth phone control, and the radio.
Airbags Won’t Work If Car Shuts Off
Even more alarming then causing the car to come to a complete and sudden stop, putting occupants at risk for a car accident, inadvertently turning off the electronic ignition in Lincoln MKC’s during use also renders the vehicle’s airbags inoperable, which increases the risk of vehicle occupants suffering serious injuries in the event of a collision. This Lincoln MKC electric ignition recall comes on the heels of a series of massive recalls announced by General Motors in 2014, involving nearly 28 million vehicles with defective ignition switches that may cause the vehicles to turn off during use. When the ignition switches failed, the affected vehicles’ airbags were also rendered inoperable, and at least 31 car accidents and 13 injuries have been linked to the GM ignition switch defect.
