Strangulation Hazard Leads to Recall of IKEA Children’s Bed Canopies
Millions of children’s bed canopies manufactured by IKEA have been recalled due to a risk of child strangulation injuries or deaths.
A worldwide recall has been issued that affects nearly 2.8 million IKEA children’s bed canopies, due to a risk that children may become entangled in the fabric of the canopy and strangle themselves. The IKEA recall was announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) on March 20, following at least nine reports of children becoming entangled in the canopy fabric, including one instance in which a seven-month-old girl was able to pull the fabric into her crib and wrap it around her neck several times before being discovered. IKEA Bed Canopies Affected by Recall
The product recall announced by the CPSC affects IKEA children’s bed canopies designed to hang from the ceiling onto a child’s bed or crib. The canopies are made out of a mesh fabric and measure approximately seven feet long by two feet in diameter. The affected products have the following names printed on the washing instructions label sewn onto the bottom of the canopies:
- Barnslig
- FABLER
- HIMMEL-blue
- HIMMEL-blue/white
- HIMMSEL-green
- HIMMEL-pink
- KLAMMIG
- LEGENDARISK
- MINNEN Bed Canopy Set
- MINNEN Brodyr
- TISSLA
The recalled canopies were manufactured in Vietnam, Estonia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic, and were imported into the United States by IKEA North America Services LLC. The products were sold online and at IKEA stores nationwide between August 1996 and March 2014, for $10 to $30. The CPSC has advised consumers to stop using the recalled children’s bed canopies immediately and return them to any IKEA store for a full refund.

According to the CPSC recall, roughly 225,000 of the recalled IKEA bed canopies were sold in the United States, 7,000 in Canada, and about 2.6 million throughout the rest of the world. Unfortunately, this isn’t the first IKEA children’s product that has been recalled recently due to a strangulation hazard. In December 2013, the company recalled close to 23 million wall-mounted lamps after a 16-month-old child became entangled in the lamp’s electric cord and strangled to death. The reason for the IKEA lamp recall was that the seven-foot-long electric cord posed a strangulation hazard if children were able to pull the cord into their crib with them.
